Mission

We seek to advance the scientific understanding of globalization and to inform effective, equitable, and empirically grounded policy responses to a rapidly changing global economy. By connecting questions that are often studied in isolation, we develop an integrated understanding of how globalization is being reshaped by new forms of trade, technological change, and shifting patterns of international production. 

The Research Unit has three main objectives:

(1)   Analyzing new forms and dimensions of international trade;
(2)   Exploring the link between new technologies and trade;
(3)   Identifying the winners and losers of globalization and the resulting challenges for policy intervention.

It is the aim to provide evidence for the emergence of new forms of trade and the impact of technology, to study the positive and normative issues associated with these changes, and to study how they have affected the costs and benefits of globalization.

Methodologically, the Research Unit combines rigorous economic theory with applied microeconometric research and structural quantitative analysis, using novel granular data at the firm, worker, and product levels. This integrated approach makes it possible to identify causal mechanisms, trace interdependencies across markets and borders, and evaluate both the intended and unintended consequences of economic policy. The ultimate objective is to provide a robust evidence base for policies that enhance economic efficiency and resilience while addressing inequality and distributional conflict.
